What Is an Engagement Session—And Should You Do One?
First off—congrats on your engagement! You’re floating on cloud nine, soaking in all the love and excitement, and now the wedding planning begins. This season of your life is such a special one, and I get to see that joy in my couples all the time.
So… what exactly is an engagement session?
Simply put, it’s a relaxed photo session for just you and your fiancé—usually lasting about an hour, in a location that’s meaningful or just plain beautiful. Most of my couples choose spots in New Orleans, or nearby parks like Mandeville, Covington, or Madisonville. It’s a fun, low-pressure time to capture your connection before the big day.
But is it really worth it? Let’s break it down:
1. Get Comfortable in Front of the CameraLet’s be real—most of us aren’t used to having a camera follow us around, and it can feel awkward at first (yes, even for me!). That’s why I always recommend an engagement session. It gives you a chance to warm up before the wedding day so that when that day comes, you're confident, relaxed, and know exactly what to expect.
2. Build a Relationship With Your PhotographerYour photographer will be with you during some of the most emotional, personal moments of your wedding day. An engagement session is the perfect way to connect ahead of time. You’ll get to know my shooting style, and I’ll get a feel for how you interact naturally—making your wedding photos even more seamless and authentic.
3. Make It a Mini Date DayEngagement sessions aren’t just about photos—they’re a chance to spend time together. I always encourage couples to make a date of it: grab lunch, stroll through a favorite park, or revisit the spot where you got engaged. Choosing a location that holds meaning to you adds even more heart to your photos.
4. Try Out Your Hair & Makeup ArtistThis is one of my favorite tips—schedule your hair and makeup trial on the same day as your engagement session! You’re already glammed up, so why not get beautiful photos out of it? If you want to keep your final look a surprise, your artist can make small tweaks to slightly change the look before the session (like loosening a hairstyle or softening eye makeup).
5. Capture the “Pre-Married” YouYour engagement is a chapter all its own—full of anticipation, tenderness, and excitement. These photos are a way to remember not just your wedding day, but the sweet season that led up to it.
6. Perfect for Save-the-Dates and Wedding DecorYour engagement photos are perfect for save-the-date cards, wedding websites, guest books, or even framed prints at your reception. They add such a personal, heartfelt touch to your wedding details.
Bottom line? An engagement session isn’t just another item on your to-do list—it’s a meaningful, memory-making experience all on its own. And you’ll come away with beautiful photos to treasure for a lifetime.
