Preparing for Your Engagement Session
Let’s be honest—preparing for an engagement session can feel a little overwhelming, especially with all the wedding planning already on your plate. But don’t worry! Over time, I’ve gathered some simple tips that have helped my couples feel more confident and relaxed going into their session.
These little things really do come together to make your shoot easier, smoother, and more enjoyable.
Why Do an Engagement Session?
Engagement sessions are more than just beautiful photos (although yes—you’ll absolutely get those!). They’re a great way for you and your partner to spend time together and connect with your photographer before the wedding day.
Many couples use their engagement photos for save-the-dates, sign-in books, canvases, or framed prints at the reception. It’s also just a lovely way to pause and celebrate this season of life.
Hair and Makeup
I highly recommend treating yourself to professional hair and makeup for your session. Not only does it photograph beautifully, but it also helps you feel extra confident and pampered. Many brides even use this opportunity to schedule their wedding day hair and makeup trial—double win.
Outfit Tips
Dress up a bit more than you think you need to—it’s always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed in photos.
Choose outfits that make you feel amazing. If you’re unsure, bring a few options—I’m always happy to help you choose what photographs best.
Accessories are a great touch. Think clutches, hats, statement jewelry, or fun shoes.
I love long dresses, heels, and flowing fabrics for a soft, romantic look. For guys, slacks, button-downs, or suits always photograph well and help elevate the feel of the session.
Stick to neutrals or soft color palettes like pastels, whites, grays, tan, or muted tones. But if your style includes bolder colors or patterns that go well together, bring it on.
Most importantly—let your outfits reflect you. Personal style always wins.
During the Session
Think of your engagement session as a relaxed, pressure-free way to get used to the camera and your photographer. The more at ease you are, the better the photos will be.
If possible, choose a private or low-traffic location. Fewer onlookers means more comfort, more connection, and more fun.
We’ll plan your session based on the best natural light, so arriving on time is very important to make the most of it.
Talk with your photographer beforehand about any locations, vibes, or specific shots you have in mind.
Stay open to spontaneous moments—some of the best photos happen when you're simply enjoying each other.
The Most Important Tip: Have Fun
This session is all about celebrating your love and this exciting chapter of your life. Laugh, be silly, snuggle up, and don’t worry about being “perfect.” Just be yourselves—and let the magic unfold.
